The book launch for Grief, Love and Hope was held on Sunday 26 October 2008 at the Merrylands Parish Hall. Helen Gordon spent most of the weekend decorating the hall and preparing a wonderful supper for our guests. Sue Elvis, the author, was present with her husband Andy and four of their children and they all shared their memories of Thomas' life and death with about 100 people who had come to celebrate the launch. They also brought with them a box containing loved memories of little Thomas and many people were touched by the Elvis family's very open and earnest account of this painful period in their lives. Sue expressed the traumatic but cathartic process of writing her diary and this book and the realization that this could help many women who experience first the news pre-term from doctors that their baby is ill and then have to manage the grief associated with that illness and the probable death of a much loved and awaited child.

Dr Catherine Lennon launched the book with words of praise for Sue's courage and commitment. She indicated that the book is an invaluable tool for Doctor's, nurses, medical staff, families and parents who have to deal with these tragedies. Dr Lennon, during her presentation, surprised Sue with a special award from the Doctors for Life NSW Branch of the World Federation of Doctors Who Respect Human Life, for 2008 BOOK OF THE YEAR and an honorary award from Friends of Matercare Australia.

The afternoon finished with supper and many of the guests were also able to buy signed copies of Grief Love and Hope, as well as books from the Cardinal Newman Faith Resources.

New Boys In The Bush by James Tierney 
16th November 2008

New Boys In The Bush has been on sale since last Christmas but this launching was an event worth waiting for. Fr John O'Neill agreed to launch the book and generously provided his Performing Arts Centre at Doonside as the venue. The setting was perfect with the grounds sparsely covered with grass and gum trees towering over 'the shed'. In fact, during the presentations the sound of leaves and twigs falling from the trees on the tin roof sometimes drowned out the speakers. Fr O'Neill spoke with genuine affection and admiration for Fr Tierney and engaged the children and adults alike with witty anecdotes and some colourful descriptions of the Australian bush and his experiences with Fr Tierney as 'bush priests'.   Fr O'Neill strongly recommended New Boys in the Bush and the other Bush Boys books as not only an entertaining read but also a lesson in life and values that many children could benefit from.

Andrew Elvis spoke after Father, informing everyone of the website, www.cardinalnewman.com.au, and its extensive information and detail on the Bush Boys series. He advised everyone that not only are there excerpts of the books but also audio files of several chapters read by Andy, a quarterly Bush Boys Magazine, produced by Sue Elvis, that provides activities and information relating to the books and a Unit Study that draws on the books to generate home study of history, nature, science, mathematics etc. All of these sections on the website can be downloaded free and are an amazing extension of Fr Tierney's books and his ideas to encourage children and adults alike in a love for the Australian bush.

As with the book launch for Grief Love and Hope, Helen and John Gordon did a tremendous amount of work preparing the hall and supper. Green and Yellow balloons added a further Australian flavour with large posters of Fr Tiemey and New Boys In the Bush adding extra colour and a presence of the author.

Mark and Gai Smith and four of heir children were also very much the back bone of the day. Mark did a wonderful job as chairman for the event while Gai and the children worked tirelessly on providing the 'bush' theme with damper cooking in a fire pit that was built and demonstrated near the hall, tents being erected and games organized. We would like to sincerely thank them for their efforts for while their contribution was mighty to begin with it became a much more significant effort after traveling down to Tarlo and back, just the night before, to attend an engagement party.

Both Book launches were a great success. The work, effort and detail committed to each event by those people already mentioned was invaluable and it is a testament to their work that each launch was distinct and characteristic of both Grief Love and Hope and New Boys in the Bush.
